Santos and club legend Pepe have paid tribute following the death of João Araújo, known as Didi, the barber credited with creating Pelé's famous quiff.
According to Globo.com, Didi was 87 and died after a cardiorespiratory arrest. He had been in Hospital Beneficência Portuguesa since the start of the month and had undergone two intestinal surgeries. He leaves a wife and three children.
In a post on social media, Santos recalled that his barbershop beside Vila Belmiro welcomed many of the club's greats, including Pelé. The club added that Pelé's celebrated hairstyle was devised there.
Pepe, Pelé's team-mate and the club's second-highest scorer, also shared a message and a photo with Didi. He said the barbershop was more than a place for grooming, serving as a hub for lively chats, laughter and friendships across generations. He remembered Didi as a simple, generous man who always listened.
The wake is being held on Tuesday until 15:40 at Beneficência Portuguesa de Santos on Rua São Paulo, 74/86, in the Vila Belmiro neighbourhood. The cortege will then proceed to a cremation ceremony at Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica, where Pelé is also buried.
