Lazio head coach Maurizio Sarri identified the team’s best outing thus far this season, and some might be surprised by his choice.
Since his return to the club, the 66-year-old has been enduring rough times on and off the pitch. Due to the transfer ban imposed by COVISOC, the management wasn’t able to strengthen the squad in the summer, leaving Sarri with virtually the same personnel that was at the disposal of his predecessor, Marco Baroni.
In his interview with the club’s social channels (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the former Napoli and Chelsea manager admitted that he had to change his style of play from possession-based football to counter-attacking football to suit his players’ characteristics.
We’re changing based on the players’ traits. I’m more suited to a ball-playing team, but this is a team that accelerates and needs to counterattack and find space. Then we need to see if we can find balance, otherwise there’s no point in scoring two goals a game and conceding two or three. The player situation will force us to change formation at times: either we get someone back or we need to look for other solutions.
Sarri, who has been complaining about the ever-increasing number of absentees, delivered the latest updates on his injured players.
Lazzari returned last week, Marusic had a check-up today (on Friday), we’ll see how Pellegrini is doing because he has a knee problem. Rovella is a long discussion, while Vecino was an enigma and we need to evaluate him. Dele-Bashiru is still out, and Isaksen had a sneaky illness that left him without strength for months, and he still has a lot of growth to do in terms of his performance. We’ll also see how Zaccagni fares. it’s an evolving situation. Two days before the match (against Atalanta), we’ll figure out what formation we’ll use.
The Lazio boss was also asked about his team’s finest display this season. But rather than picking one of the comfortable wins over Hellas Verona and Genoa, he opted for the Derby della Capitale defeat to Roma, as he felt his men had the upper hand, despite losing 0-1.
Our best performance was against Roma, which is a strong, healthy team. Losing left us with a huge disappointment. But We have to give these guys some credit. I feel compelled to defend them; they fought hard without excuses and played to get a result.

Sarri had also undergone a difficult start to the 2023/24 campaign, which culminated in his mid-season resignation. However, he insists that the current situation is drastically different.
Compared to my third season here, the situation is completely different. Back then, there was a unique opportunity to make a significant leap in quality. The sale of Milinkovic-Savic and the Champions League qualification allowed us to do so. I was disappointed because we weren’t making that step forward. This season, however, I’ve accepted the difficulties. I can’t be disappointed; I knew it would be difficult. The conditions were different in my third year, which is why I wasn’t happy.
The Italian manager also heaped praise on Matteo Cancellieri, who has been Lazio’s biggest revelation of the season, but warned about the individualistic approach.
He’s growing on his own. I’ve found him different from two years ago. He’s much more mature, confident in his abilities. He’s at his best in acceleration and attacking spaces. If we force him to pass the ball around, we take away some of his qualities. He can still improve a lot in his direct duels when he enters the box. Now he’s focused on his development, and he isn’t showing signs of arrogance, and I think that’s crucial. Unfortunately, we have several instinctive players, and that makes it difficult for us to become a team. I’ve seen instinctive players win very few games in fifty years. If Maradona does it, it’s fine; if an average-to-good player tries it, it’s less so. That’s how I see football.
On the other hand, Sarri admitted that Tijjani Noslin is a dilemma, as finding him a suitable role has been challenging.
He’s a difficult player for a coach, as it’s hard to place him in a context. He has the legs of a winger, but he’s not really one; he could be an attacking midfielder, but he doesn’t have the required technique; he can be a center forward, but he’s not one to the full extent. He’s a player who can help us in certain situations. He has quality and adds depth to the squad.
