According to the BBC, around 100 Scotland supporters have hired 20 US school buses to avoid expensive FIFA-imposed transport charges for their 2026 World Cup opener against Haiti in Foxborough, near Boston.
The move comes amid rising travel costs for the tournament, which runs from 11 June to 19 July. Scotland face Haiti at Gillette Stadium on 14 June, kick-off 3am.
Based in Providence, about 30 kilometres from Foxborough, the group arranged its own transport to save money. One supporter said they reasoned school buses could be idle while schools were closed, then contacted firms offering acceptable rates.
They secured a fleet at $38 per person across 20 buses, and will receive a local police escort out of the city to the highway.
The initiative followed a spike in prices set by FIFA and local organisers, with tickets priced at $80 for a train and $90 for a bus per person, about three times the usual Boston to stadium fare.
The report added that in Miami, where Scotland play Brazil on 25 June at 12am, ticket holders will be offered free bus travel to the Hard Rock Stadium. This summer marks Scotland’s first World Cup finals since 1998.
