A Segunda División referee under investigation for allegedly assaulting a sex worker in Gijón while posing as a police officer was identified through his mobile number. La Nueva España first revealed the case, saying officers traced him after the complainant provided the number.
She later identified him from a photograph. The case has moved to a Madrid court for violence against women because the Venezuelan complainant lives there.
The man, about 30, appeared before a judge in Gijón and was released provisionally with precautionary measures. The duty Investigating Court number one initially took the case, then passed it to number five.
The episode caused a stir as the referee is well known in Oviedo and Asturian football. The Technical Committee of Referees was unaware early yesterday, then internally noted the complaint and activated procedures.
Police are examining whether the late January incident was isolated or if there have been similar cases of alleged impersonation. The complaint states he coerced the woman into sex by threatening to alert immigration and that he wore clothing with police insignia.
Officers from El Natahoyo station searched his home for official uniforms from the Local Police or the Guardia Civil. None were found, only T-shirts and polos with police badges, the report said.
He remains under investigation for alleged sexual assault. The complainant is expected to give evidence in court as the inquiry continues.
