Sergio Gómez has become indispensable for Real Sociedad this season, nailing down the left flank. He has featured in 27 of 29 La Liga rounds, missing only matchdays 21 and 24, with 23 starts and four off the bench.

"I feel very good, very confident, among other things because injuries are allowing me to have that continuity every player looks for," he said, speaking to AS.

"I have tried to make the most of every opportunity and now I feel very secure on the pitch," the Catalan added.

Previously labelled a utility player for his versatility, he now looks firmly settled at left-back. That continuity has remained under Sergio Francisco early on and since Pellegrino Matarazzo arrived, helping him build rhythm and defensive automatisms. It is his best spell since joining two summers ago.

His involvement has been heavy in the Copa del Rey too, with seven appearances, five starts and two as a substitute. In the league Aihen Muñoz has 681 minutes compared with more than 2,060 for the Badalona-born defender.

His form earned a place on Luis de la Fuente’s preliminary Spain squad for this international window, though he did not make the final cut. The national coach is continuing to monitor him as Real Sociedad approach the run-in and the Copa del Rey final at La Cartuja in Sevilla.
