Sheffield Wednesday are eyeing an emergency loan move for Joe Lumley from Bristol City.

According to journalist Dom Howson, the Owls are eyeing approval from the EFL to complete the deal after Ethan Horvath was sent off last weekend.

The Yorkshire outfit will be without a recognised goalkeeper in their squad unless someone can be signed, which opens the door for an emergency transfer.

Pierce Charles is the only other option in Henrik Pedersen’s squad, with the youngster currently out with an injury.

Horvath was sent off in the dying moments of Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to Charlton Athletic on Saturday.

It’s believed that the EFL are willing to approve the loan of Lumley to Sheffield Wednesday following Horvath’s red card.

The shot-stopper is set to miss the next two league fixtures for the Owls, which will leave the club without a recognised number one.

A shoulder injury suffered in August has kept him out of action, having previously solidified his place as first-choice at Hillsborough at the age of 20.

Lumley joined Bristol City as a free agent last summer, but has not played a role in Gerhard Struber’s first team plans, which has opened the door for a short-term loan to Sheffield Wednesday.

The 30-year-old has previously played for the likes of Southampton, Reading, Middlesbrough and QPR in the Championship.

It remains unclear how long Lumley will be with Sheffield Wednesday, if this deal goes through, although it’s likely it will just cover the two games this week that Horvath will be unavailable for.

The Owls will also be able to call upon their U18 side to find a goalkeeper, who is likely to sit on the bench in their upcoming clashes against Middlesbrough and Oxford United.

Joe Lumley transfer would ease the pressure on Sheffield Wednesday’s youngsters

Horvath’s red card capped off another miserable weekend for the club, who fell to bottom of the table with their loss to the Addicks.

While the Owls have an embargo on player registrations at the moment, it is reasonable for the EFL to sanction this emergency loan when it’s likely to only last one week anyway.

Having Charles back soon would be a huge boost for Pedersen’s side given the promise he showed prior to his injury.

It would also give the team two goalkeepers to choose from, along with Horvath, which should give some relief to the team that would otherwise be throwing in untested teenagers into the senior side.
