Rangers are reportedly interested in Sheffield Wednesday defender Max Lowe as Danny Rohl looks to raid his former club.

Rangers manager Danny Rohl is reportedly keen to reunite with one of his former Sheffield Wednesday players this month before the transfer window closes.

With Wednesday still in administration as the wait goes on to discover whether their proposed takeover by James Bord's consortium will be approved by the EFL, they may need to cash in on some of their stars before the end of the January transfer window in order to raise funds to help them through the rest of the season.

A number of Owls players are believed to be attracting interest this month, including Pierce Charles, Yisa Alao, Charlie McNeill and Bailey Cadamarteri, and long-serving captain Barry Bannan is also thought to have admirers, with Stoke City, Millwall, Preston North End and Motherwell among those chasing his signature.

And now, Max Lowe is the latest player to be linked with a move away from Hillsborough, with The Star revealing on Saturday morning that Rangers made an enquiry for the defender earlier in the window as Rohl looks to bring him north of the border.

The 28-year-old crossed the Steel City divide last summer when he joined Wednesday on a free transfer last summer after his departure from Sheffield United, and he has made 21 appearances in all competitions this season, but he is currently sidelined with a calf injury that is expected to keep him out until at least early February.

It looked as though Lowe was set to leave Wednesday in the summer when he handed in his notice amid the club's financial turmoil under former owner Dejphon Chansiri.

There was no shortage of interest in Lowe, with Preston and Leicester City both believed to have been keen, but unlike his team-mates Josh Windass and Michael Smith, who took up their option to terminate their contracts, the 28-year-old had a change of heart and opted to remain at Hillsborough.

However, Lowe's future with the Owls is once again in doubt after Rangers made an enquiry about his services as Rohl looks to reunite with him at Ibrox, although it is unclear at this stage whether they will return with a formal offer.

The Star claim that the chances of Lowe departing this month are "slim", and he is said to have "no immediate desire" to move on, but with his contract in S6 set to expire in the summer, the Gers could open pre-contract talks with the defender as they are based outside England.

After his controversial summer exit from Wednesday, Rohl took over at Rangers in October, and his side currently sit third in the Scottish Premiership table, level on points with second-placed Celtic and six points behind leaders Hearts.

Sheffield Wednesday should cash in on Max Lowe in January amid Rangers interest

As their squad is already threadbare, Wednesday will be reluctant to lose any of their few remaining senior players in January, but they may be forced to sell for financial reasons.

Lowe has been one of their most consistent performers since his arrival from Sheffield United last summer, but with his contract expiring at the end of the season, it seems highly unlikely he will sign an extension with the Owls in League One.

With that in mind, Wednesday should consider sanctioning Lowe's exit this month if Rangers were to make a formal bid before the end of the window to ensure that they at least receive some money for the defender, rather than losing him for free in the summer.
