Liverpool are pushing to complete a giant transfer. Now there's been a significant update.
Liverpool need to sign a centre-back in 2026 - there's little question about that. Giovanni Leoni's long-term injury pushes them into a difficult position, requiring a bit of manoeuvring if they're to solidify the squad.
Liverpool have just three senior centre-backs as things stand. One of those is Joe Gomez, who the Reds were willing to sell in the summer to make way for Marc Guehi.
Another is Ibrahima Konate - a player closing in on the final six months of his contract. Even Virgil van Dijk has question marks over him, purely because he's now 34.
It's why Liverpool have their eyes on Dayot Upamecano. The Frenchman, like Konate, is out of contract in the summer and Bayern Munich are struggling a little to get a deal done.

Upamecano appears to want a massive pay rise, with the Bavarians unsure if they can afford it. It opens the door for Liverpool to push towards a transfer if they can meet those demands.
However, there's been a significant update here.
Christian Falk reports that Bayern have agreed on terms with Upamecano as far as a salary goes. However, they’re yet to find common ground with a signing-on fee.
It’s reported that Bayern are hopeful they’ll agree terms there, too, but right now they’re yet to do so. The door is still open for Liverpool, then, even if it’s not as wide as it once was.
