Manchester United boss Marc Skinner compared Maya Le Tissier’s mentality to that of Lucy Bronze as she reached her 100th appearance for her club.

United cruised to a 5-1 victory over newly-promoted London City Lionesses, leaving Skinner’s side top of the Women’s Super League table on goal difference after two games.

Captain Le Tissier scored the first goal of the five, as she slotted home a penalty in the third minute and Skinner praised his captain’s mentality as the 23-year-old marked her milestone in style.

Skinner said: “Maya had no idea it was her 100th appearance, I had to tell her at the end. It shows so much about what she’s like.

“Shes just an ultra competitor. At half time she was going mad, even though we were 2-0 up, because our quality on the ball wasn’t good enough. It says a lot about her – she just loves playing football.

“To be available for the amount of games she has been – I think Lucy Bronze is the same ilk of a player, there’s not many who do it. For her to be able to do it – that’s why she’s my captain.”

Le Tissier’s goal was backed up with a goal from Jayde Riviere, followed by two second-half goals from Melvine Malard, before former Manchester United player Nikita Parris scored a consolation goal for the home side.

Jess Park wrapped the game up, scoring United’s fifth, her first goal since moving to the red side of Manchester.

Skinner said:  “Jess Park, I found that at City, she was, and she’ll say this herself, a little bit constrained in the way that they play at times.

“Not a negative, just different, and we want to unlock her potential. If you look at her spaces today, she just found the right spaces.”

Despite United’s perfect WSL start, which has seen them score nine and concede only one in their first two games, they will need to refocus quickly on Thursday’s Champions League qualifier.

They face Brann at Leigh Sports Village, going into the second leg 1-0 down, but desperate to reach the next stage of the competition for the first time in their history.
