United closing in on Ederson acquisition

As a result, Ederson would become United’s first signing of the summer, as well as the first-ever under Michael Carrick.

The prospective transfer is expected to cost around £38 million, with Atalanta open to a sale in order to prevent the Brazilian leaving for nothing when his contract expires next summer.

Ederson had been on the verge of signing for Atletico Madrid back in March when he agreed personal terms with the club, but Atleti were unwilling to shell out his price tag.

They instead turned their attention to Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Joao Gomes, who has also been linked with a switch to Old Trafford in recent months.

INEOS decide on Ederson despite supporter concerns

Fans have been divided over the prospect of signing Ederson who, prior to moving to Italy in 2022, had played all of his football in his native Brazil.

He then spent six months with Salernitana before signing for Atalanta in July 2022, where he has since been seeing out his five-year contract.

The 26-year-old enjoyed his most notable campaign in Bergamo when winning the Europa League in 2023/2024, and he has racked up a whopping 180 appearances for the side across all competitions.

Assuming Ederson does indeed become a United player in the coming days, he will not be the only midfielder signed by INEOS in the window.

There’s an understanding amongst the board that depth in that particular position is essential heading into the new term, when United will have Champions League action added to the schedule for the first time since December 2023.
