In a recent update from Real Madrid Confidencial, it has been revealed that Xabi Alonso has already started working on one of his most crucial tasks as Real Madrid manager – finding a worthy successor to Luka Modric.

With both Modric and Toni Kroos now gone, Los Blancos are facing the new season without two of their most influential midfielders.

To fill the creative void, Alonso has narrowed the field to two internal candidates: Dani Ceballos and Arda Guler.

The Spanish tactician wants to evaluate both players closely during the pre-season before deciding who will take over as the team’s primary playmaker.

Guler favoured but yet to prove himself

Guler seemed to be ahead in the pecking order not long ago. During the Club World Cup, Alonso gave the Turkish youngster significant minutes, even starting him in key matches.

However, the heavy loss against Paris Saint-Germain cast some doubt on whether Guler is ready for such a demanding role. He appeared physically overwhelmed in that clash, as the PSG midfield dominated the game.

Guler has since been working on his physical strength during the summer break. Alonso plans to monitor his progress throughout pre-season, looking for signs of growth and resilience as the competition intensifies.

Ceballos fighting for his spot

Meanwhile, Ceballos remains in the mix despite ongoing speculation about a return to Real Betis. Financial constraints made that move unfeasible, and the midfielder is now focused on proving himself in Madrid.

He brings a different profile, as he is more experienced, has better positional awareness, and also has a deeper understanding of the club’s expectations.

Ceballos did not start a single match under Alonso at the Club World Cup and saw limited minutes overall. But with pre-season offering a fresh slate, he now has the opportunity to change that narrative.
