Saints midfielder Shea Charles has halted training after a possible setback in his recovery from an October hamstring injury.
According to Daily Echo, the 22-year-old felt something in Tuesday’s session, went for a scan and has not trained since. He had been nearing a return after seven weeks out.
He initially suffered the problem at Blackburn Rovers, and a poor diagnosis could keep him out into January despite being on course to feature this month. The Manchester City academy graduate had been a regular earlier in the campaign.
He was due to enter the final year of his contract next season, and the club hold an extension clause.
Saints remain without a natural right-back, with Elias Jelert and Mads Roerslev sidelined by injuries from October and November. Both are set to rejoin training next week, with Jelert early in the week and, as it stands, Roerslev a couple of days later. Their return would be timely after Tom Fellows’ recent groin issue.
Stewart, out of contract at the end of the season, is edging closer and could join first-team training this month. The 29-year-old has been out with a hamstring issue since early October, when he was forced off in the first half against Derby County. He is on track for a mid-December return to training.
