Spain’s final training before the 2026 World Cup final against Argentina was cancelled in New Jersey after an electrical storm, with the squad switching to a gym session.

The federation announced that the workout at the New York Red Bull facilities, specifically the Melanie Lane Training Ground, was suspended under US lightning safety protocol. Activity must stop if fewer than 30 seconds separate lightning and thunder, and cannot resume until 30 minutes after the last rumble.

Saturday’s storms meant the players, who were about to step on to the pitch to complete preparations for facing Leo Messi’s side, initially waited for conditions to improve. FIFA officials then called the session off.

It is the second time this tournament Spain have been disrupted by severe weather. At their Chattanooga base in the group stage the session began but was halted, whereas this time it was cancelled before it even started.

Spain have been cautious with Lamine Yamal after the semi-final against France, but he will be fit to start against Argentina. Pedro Porro will also be available, leaving Luis de la Fuente with a full squad, even if some are not at 100%. Both trained with the group in the penultimate session.
