Ahead of this Newcastle v Barcelona match on Thursday, intriguing to see what is making headlines in the Spanish media regarding the upcoming game.
Barcelona set to play at St James’ Park for a third time in the Champions League, following United winning 3-2 at SJP in 1997, then losing 2-0 in 2003.
Spanish media outlet ‘Sport’ has gone with a big story ahead of Thursday’s match BUT it is concentrating on Newcastle United fans and the challenges of trying to get a ticket for the game.
With over 110,000 Newcastle United members queuing online for tickets and only a small percentage successful.
Then we have the now infamous High School of Dundee. Even making headlines in the Spanish media ahead of the match, how the £20k a year private school must be absolutely hating the fact that they are part of a story making such negative headlines about tickets that should never have gone to these Scottish schoolkids. Making headlines not just on Tyneside (and in Scotland) but all across the UK and around the world!
‘If Newcastle’s fans are already one of the loudest in the Premier League, there’s no doubt they’ll be even louder in this clash against Barça. The excitement among the northern English club’s supporters is at its peak. Proof of this is the large number of members who queued last Monday to try to get the few available tickets.
More than 110,000 people visited Newcastle’s website to get a ticket for the big game….tickets sold out quickly, so St. James’s Park will be packed with 52,300 spectators, who will be hoping to repeat the victory over Barcelona in 1997.
Ticket sales for this major Champions League clash have not been without controversy. According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle is targeting 750 fans for ticket scalping and that 78 season tickets have already been cancelled this season. Furthermore, during the process of obtaining tickets for the match against Barça, more than 130,000 bot attempts were blocked.
In fact, a dispute has also erupted between the club and fans in recent days after the High School of Dundee, a private school in Scotland, offered 45 packages to its students that included a match ticket, travel, food, and accommodation for £295.
