Lewis Norman Dobbin struck in the eighth minute with a left-footed finish, setting Preston North End on course for a 2-0 win over Bristol City.
He steered the ball into the bottom right corner from Jordan Thompson's pass (8.), the early precision quietening City.
After the restart he forced a block with a drive from the left side of the box (50.). Moments later he had another effort charged down from outside the area (65.).
Dobbin finished with five attempts, one on target, four touches in the box and two successful dribbles, plus three recoveries, before making way (67.). That mix of direct running and constant threat in front of goal kept the Robins' back line occupied and gave Preston a platform.
Preston rise from sixth to fourth in the Championship. Preston host Wigan in the FA Cup next. City host Watford in the FA Cup.
