Sunderland striker Trey Ogunsuyi has joined Shrewsbury Town on loan until the end of the season, the club confirmed.
The 19-year-old spent the first half of this campaign with Falkirk but struggled for minutes, starting two games and making seven further appearances from the bench without scoring.
He returned to the Academy of Light earlier this week and now heads to Shrewsbury for the remainder of the campaign. The Shrews sit 22nd in League Two, two points above Newport County and Harrogate Town.
Academy manager Robin Nicholls described the move as an exciting chance for Ogunsuyi to earn EFL minutes at a crucial stage of his development. He said Shrewsbury face an important spell and, like Sunderland, feel the striker could make an immediate impact, while his Falkirk stint offered a valuable taste of senior football and tests beyond the pitch.
Shrewsbury boss Michael Appleton highlighted the teenager’s size, strength, pace and movement, noting he is comfortable both running in behind and coming to feet. He added that the forward has scored at youth level, now needs to show it in senior football, and he hopes to provide the minutes that were lacking at Falkirk.
Ogunsuyi made his senior Sunderland debut as a late substitute in last season’s FA Cup third round defeat to Stoke City. He was named in Regis Le Bris’s Championship matchday squads on several other occasions and struck 15 goals in 20 games for the under-21s last term.
