Sunderland have sold a majority stake in their women’s team to US multi-club group Bay Collective, which is backed by Sixth Street and also owns Bay FC.
According to Sunderland Echo, the agreement follows almost a year of talks and remains subject to approval from the relevant footballing authorities.
The club will retain a minority share to protect identity, values and intellectual property, with the team run alongside the wider club and staying at the Academy of Light.
Interim CEO Tom Burwell called it a significant step after assessing multiple options, saying Bay Collective offers global expertise, resources and a long-term approach that respects what makes Sunderland special.
He said the deal sits within Sunderland’s global investment plan and includes developing key infrastructure, including the Academy of Light, to support women’s, men’s and Academy teams.
Bay Collective chief executive Kay Cossington said the group will honour Sunderland Women’s DNA, providing tailored resources and training models and strengthening ties with fans and partners for the long term.
A joint statement said the partnership will focus on strengthening players, staff, infrastructure and performance environments, and on enhancing matchday experience and operations to support sustainable growth.
Sunderland are eighth in WSL 2 with two games left, and fresh investment is viewed as vital to closing the gap and pursuing Super League ambitions.
