Max Eberl is fighting for a future at FC Bayern beyond 2027. Now, a former top Munich official has spoken out—and presented surprisingly clear arguments in favor of extending the sporting director’s contract.

For months, there has been discussion around Säbener Straße about whether the collaboration with Eberl will continue beyond his current contract. The sporting director’s contract expires in the summer of 2027. Ironically, it is an old acquaintance from Munich who now views the matter in a decidedly positive light.

Michael Reschke, who served as technical director at FC Bayern from 2014 to 2017, voiced his support for the 52-year-old in an interview with the tz . Admittedly, the supervisory board will “seriously consider” the question of an extension, as the 68-year-old acknowledged. For him, however, the verdict is clear: “But the sum of his very good decisions speaks in Max’s favor and for an extension.”

From Hoeneß’s Doubts to a Strong Endorsement

The club itself had recently sounded even more cautious. In a May interview with *Der Spiegel*, Honorary President Uli Hoeneß publicly estimated the odds at “60 to 40 in favor of an extension”—but added afterward: “There are still doubts.”

Since then, Eberl has apparently made up ground. As Sport BILD reported in early July, the supervisory board would now give the squad planner a “good evaluation.” He can therefore have justified hopes for a new contract.

This summer’s personnel decisions are the main source of momentum. Eberl signed two new players: left back Nathaniel Brown and attacking midfielder Ismael Saibari.
