Former West Ham boss Graham Potter has been confirmed as Sweden’s new national team coach. The 50-year-old has agreed to take charge on a short-term deal as the Swedish FA looks to revive their struggling World Cup qualification hopes.

Potter said: "I am very humbled by the assignment, but also incredibly inspired. Sweden has fantastic players who deliver in the world's best leagues during the weeks. "My job will be to create the conditions so that we as a team deliver at the highest level to take Sweden to the World Cup next summer."

Sweden have been searching for a replacement since parting ways with Jon Dahl Tomasson after a 1-0 defeat to Kosovo on 13 October — a result that ended their chances of automatic progression from the group.

Nevertheless, they still have a path to the play-offs, courtesy of their impressive 2024–25 Nations League campaign, where they finished top of their section.

Potter lost his position at West Ham at the end of September after a poor run of form. Five defeats in six matches left the Hammers languishing in the Premier League’s bottom three. Overall, he secured only six wins in 23 games after taking over the east London club in January.

Despite that setback, Potter remains well-regarded in Sweden, where he guided Ostersund through three promotions in four seasons — climbing from the fourth tier to the Allsvenskan — and claimed the Swedish Cup in 2017.

Before his Premier League ventures, Potter also impressed at Swansea City and Brighton, later joining Chelsea in 2022, though he was dismissed after just seven months in charge at Stamford Bridge.
