Dominik Szoboszlai delivered a blunt verdict on Liverpool’s 1-0 Champions League defeat to Galatasaray, admitting he was angry at a display that fell short.
Arne Slot’s side laboured in Istanbul, struggling for rhythm at RAMS Park before Mario Lemina’s header separated the sides in the first leg.
“I was pretty angry after the game. It wasn’t just the result. I feel that we didn’t play in a way like we should—and we know we can. We’ve shown many times that we are capable of competing with and beating any team in Europe or the Premier League,” he told the club’s official website.
“I can’t wait for it,” he added. Liverpool host Tottenham on Sunday, then the high-stakes return leg follows on Wednesday.
Discontent has grown among supporters and pundits. Former winger Jermaine Pennant criticised Slot’s decisions, notably the choice not to use 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha when chasing a goal.
Several players drew flak too, with Ibrahima Konaté’s shaky outing highlighted by fans who likened him to Bambi on ice in an intense atmosphere.
Club leadership is said to be keeping faith with Slot for now, yet pressure is building. Liverpool must overturn the deficit and fight for a top-four finish to secure Champions League football in 2026/27.
Jamie Carragher noted that the Reds remain favourites to turn it around at Anfield, but a failure to reach the quarter-finals combined with a poor league finish would likely see the season judged a failure, raising doubts over Slot’s long-term prospects.
