Liverpool supporters will not be reassured by the latest reports surrounding Ibrahima Konate, whose contract is set to expire in 2026. Despite Arne Slot guiding the club to Premier League glory in 2024, long term planning at centre back remains unresolved.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has passed on a reminder that discussions involving Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano are still active. That situation could have serious implications for Liverpool and Ibrahima Konate, given that Real Madrid are reportedly monitoring both defenders.
“Talks are ongoing to get new deal done for Dayot Upamecano. Of course I hope that Dayot will stay with us for a long time to come,” said Bayern president Herbert Hainer.
Real Madrid’s defensive reshuffle appears imminent. David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger are expected to move on, and with Arsenal tying down William Saliba until 2030, options are limited for the Spanish champions. If Bayern succeed in extending Upamecano’s contract, eyes will swiftly turn to Konate.
The French international has made 142 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 5 goals and providing 4 assists. His win rate sits at 66.9 percent and that level of consistency is not easily replaced. Losing him for free would be a damaging outcome, both financially and competitively.
Giovanni Leoni is sidelined for around a year, leaving Liverpool exposed in central defence ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. In practical terms that means only two fit senior centre backs across all competitions if Ibrahima Konate departs.
That scenario would force the club into the market for multiple recruits rather than one strategic addition. Bringing in two centre halves at once increases risk, disrupts cohesion and limits funds for other areas. Marc Guehi has been linked, but his arrival alone would not solve the problem.
Liverpool have handled renewal situations well in recent years but cannot afford hesitation with Konate. Allowing Real Madrid a free run would be negligent. Whether an agreement is found or a sale is sanctioned early, clarity is needed sooner than later.
The message from today’s developments is simple. Bayern want to keep Upamecano, Real Madrid are waiting and Liverpool must dictate terms rather than react. Should Konate commit his future, the club retain one of Europe’s premier athletes in his position. If not, they must replace both his physicality and leadership.
Either choice demands urgency. Standing still is no longer an option.
