Marc-Andre ter Stegen is on his way to Amsterdam after leaving FC Barcelona’s pre-season training camp at St. George’s Park, in order to officially complete his loan move to AFC Ajax.

Although Barcelona, Ajax and the goalkeeper have reached an agreement on the main terms of the deal, several formal steps remain before the transfer can be finalised.

Final steps

Before the move is officially announced, Ter Stegen must complete his medical examination, finalise the remaining contractual documentation, and sign all relevant agreements.

As a result, the German goalkeeper will not begin training with Ajax until every aspect of the transfer has been completed.

The delay is largely procedural after weeks of negotiations over the structure of the loan.

Discussions focused on salary distribution, financial terms and tax-related differences between Spain and the Netherlands, with the delays getting resolved on Thursday.

Ter Stegen had remained with Barcelona throughout pre-season while the clubs worked through the final details. Once the major issues were resolved, he received permission to leave the training camp and travel to the Netherlands.

Speaking briefly at Birmingham Airport before boarding his flight, the goalkeeper acknowledged that the process is not yet complete.

“It’s not all done yet,” he said, as quoted by SPORT.

Barcelona remain confident

Despite the remaining formalities, Barcelona are confident there are no major obstacles that could jeopardize the agreement.

Club officials view the outstanding issues as standard legal and administrative procedures that accompany an international loan transfer.

Once those are completed, the move is expected to be formally announced in the coming days, following which he will make himself available for Ajax, whose season is already underway.

As part of the loan agreement, the Blaugrana will continue paying 90% of their departing captain’s salary. Therefore, the temporary exit does not provide much relief when it comes to the Financial Fair Play aspect.

Nonetheless, Barcelona will be glad to see Ter Stegen depart, hoping that he enjoys a successful spell at Ajax, potentially paving the way for them to offload him permanently next year.
