With a goal or assist in seven consecutive knockout games, no player has shaped the business end of the Champions League this season more than Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. We analyse how his blend of creativity, verticality and newly-found defensive sacrifice has taken PSG to another level.

Georgia will not be at the World Cup next month.

For the billions tuning into the tournament, that means a summer without Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Georgia has long been a nation that treats football as an instrument of art rather than merely a sport. From the dancing feet of Georgi Kinkladze to the historic 1981 Cup Winners’ Cup triumph of Dinamo Tbilisi, the country has a rich lineage of technical wizards.

Kvaratskhelia is Dinamo’s most illustrious modern descendant. After honing his craft in his homeland and Russia, he arrived at Napoli in 2022 as a fresh-faced 21-year-old. He quickly established himself as the technical leader of the team and an emerging talent across the continent. By the end of his debut season, he had been named Serie A MVP and the UEFA Champions League Young Player of the Season.

‘Kvaradona’ was born in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius.

The nickname was no exaggeration. Across his two-and-a-half-year spell in Italy, Kvaratskhelia was involved in more open-play league goals than any other Napoli player (21 goals, 17 assists) and completed a Serie A-high 196 dribbles.

It was this blend of aesthetic brilliance and cold efficiency that convinced Paris Saint-Germain to make him a cornerstone of their European project in January 2025.

Upon his arrival, Luis Enrique noted precisely why they signed him: “He has great one-vs-one ability and can play inside or as a number nine. He embodies this idea of versatility, with his ability to overlap and adapt to our system.”

Conquering Europe

If there were fears that the weight of the Parc des Princes might dull his spark, they were swiftly extinguished. Since his Champions League debut for PSG, Kvaratskhelia has become central to the Parisian attack.

In the current 2025-26 campaign, he is tied with Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé for the most goal involvements in the competition (16). Crucially, he has saved his best for the biggest stages; his 10 goal involvements in this season’s knockout phase is a tournament high, while he is also the first player ever to score or assist in seven consecutive knockout appearances in a single Champions League campaign.

Kvaratskhelia does not merely participate in PSG’s build-up; he dictates the tempo through his sheer verticality.

While his progressive carry data (2,666m) highlights his season-long influence, a single sequence during the Champions League semi-final at the Allianz Arena against Bayern Munich served as the perfect microcosm of his efficiency.

The opening goal, scored after just three minutes, was a masterpiece of individual acceleration within a collective structure.

The move began with a vertical pass from Willian Pacho. Stationed in his own half with his back to goal, Kvaratskhelia resisted the urge to turn into traffic. Instead, he produced a crisp, one-touch layoff to Fabián Ruiz.

Even before the ball had left his boot, Kvaratskhelia was already pivoting. He left Dayot Upamecano in his shadow, transforming from a stationary target into a sprinting threat in a fraction of a second.

Ruiz matched the Georgian’s intent with a perfectly weighted first-time ball into space. Kvaratskhelia’s burst was devastating; in the three seconds after the second screenshot, he had already breached the halfway line, devouring the Allianz Arena surface.

After just four touches to carry the ball deep into the final third, Kvaratskhelia maintained a remarkably clear head. Rather than a hurried cross, he delivered a pinpoint cut-back for the arriving Ousmane Dembélé to sweep home.

While the goal relied on the combination of Ruiz’s vision and Dembélé’s movement, it was Kvaratskhelia who acted as the primary engine. In the space of nine seconds, the Georgian winger touched the ball five times and covered over 60 metres, turning a standard recovery phase in his own half into a tie-defining goal.

From Artist to Soldier

Perhaps the most striking development in Kvaratskhelia’s game under Luis Enrique is his defensive industry.

The PSG boss was clear on his potential in this part of the game from the outset: “He has a great capacity for defending; we need all eleven players to defend.”

That humility was evident during the second-leg against Bayern, where PSG were forced to survive with less than 35% of the ball.

“Technically, I was just as good at Napoli,” Kvaratskhelia admitted ahead of the first leg. “But I have improved a lot defensively with Luis Enrique. With this coach, we have to defend like defenders.”

The data backs up his sentiment. Kvaratskhelia is one of only two wingers to register 800+ high-intensity pressures in the Champions League since the start of last season’s knockout rounds.

While his heatmap remains the most scorched down his favoured left flank, Kvaratskhelia’s role is now one of tactical balance and opportunistic switches with the likes of Désiré Doué and Bradley Barcola.

Outside of the midfield control tower that is Vitinha, Kvaratskhelia’s most frequent passing partners are full-backs Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi.

Off the ball, his tracking back and willingness to tuck inside provides the security and platform that allows the two marauding full-backs to vacate their posts and join the attack.

This defensive selflessness has transformed Kvaratskhelia from an entertainer into one of the most complete attacking players in Europe.

It could prove a decisive factor in their upcoming final against Arsenal, as PSG stand on the verge of becoming only the second club in the Champions League era to retain their crown.

World Cup or not, ‘Kvaradona’ is already one of the shining lights of 2026.
