22 players sank to the turf as the referee blew the final whistle in Bremen. A 0-0 draw between Werder and Leipzig was not the result either side wanted, but it was the SVW players who felt particularly deflated, having had the better chances by far. WERDER.DE rounds up the post-match reaction from the Green-Whites.
Head coach Ole Werner: “It may well have been one of our best performances this season. It was a very open game; we pressed them from the first minute. It’s hard to explain how a match like that has ended 0-0. The only thing I’m disappointed with today is the result. In terms of how we came out and performed, I can only take my hat off to the boys. We were just missing a goal.”
Captain Marco Friedl: “I can’t remember a lot of games where we’ve had that many chances. It’s hard to create that many openings against Leipzig. We played really well both in attack and defence, so it’s gutting to be standing here wondering how we’ve drawn 0-0. All in all, I’m proud of that team, because I know what they’re capable of producing. I wasn’t surprised by our performance at all, but the overwhelming feeling now is disappointment.”
Niklas Stark: “You know we’ve played well when we’re disappointed with a draw against Leipzig. We defended as a unit, created chances and were strong at both ends of the pitch. The fact that the ball didn’t want to cross the line today is hard to take. When you look at this run of seven games, we can be very proud to have had the chance to finish sixth right until the end.”
Amos Pieper: “We had hoped to give our fans a nicer ending to the season, especially as there was more on offer today and in our last two games. It’s very disappointing that sixth is now out of reach for us. It will take a bit of time for us to feel pride that we were in the fight until the end, but right now it’s just disappointment. Everyone left everything on the pitch, physically and mentally.”
Director of professional football Peter Niemeyer: “We played with courage from start to finish today. It was a special atmosphere today – the team and the stadium were one, but it wasn’t quite enough to get us the three points. For our penalty shout, the referee felt that it wasn’t clear and obvious – I would have preferred it if he had looked at it again himself.”
