Dwight Yorke has rallied behind his former club to oversee a relatively successful campaign, which would ideally culminate with them securing a Champions League spot.

He’ll be hoping he isn’t made to eat his words come May 2025, though, as the Manchester United treble-winner has stood firm in his stance that neither Chelsea nor Tottenham Hotspur are ahead of the Red Devils at present, especially the latter.

After four matches played, United sit 10th-placed in the Premier League table, having sustained two defeats while picking up two losses. Chelsea are eighth with two wins, a draw and a loss to their name, while Spurs rank further down in 13th, on the back of a win, a draw and two defeats.

All three of the clubs will have entered the term with the belief that they can finish in the top-four, and are perhaps realistic in their private admissions that neither side is ready to go toe-to-toe for the top spot.

Yorke makes confident United admission

On BeIN Sports over the weekend, Richard Keys explained to Yorke that he rated Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs’ chances of a top-four placement higher than United’s – but Yorke wasn’t having any of it.

“It is a good question. I think Man United has got a good chance,” he began. “I disagree with you on two of them. If you put Chelsea and Tottenham ahead of Man United, that’s not happening.

“There’s no way Tottenham are ahead of Manchester United. No way. As bad as we may be right now, current position, Tottenham is not ahead of Man United in any department. Well, beautiful stadium, I’ll give you that.”
