Vasco could be without Thiago Mendes for the Flamengo derby on Sunday the third at the Maracanã, after STJD prosecutor Roberto Maldonado opened a case over his post-match comments, according to Atenção, Vascaínos.
Mendes faces a suspension of up to six matches, with a hearing expected by Thursday the 30th. The charge falls under the same article used in Hugo Souza’s case, when the former Flamengo goalkeeper received the minimum penalty and sat out against Vasco on Sunday the 26th.
Vasco lost 1-0 to Corinthians in São Paulo at Neo Química Arena on Sunday the 26th. After the game, Mendes criticised the officiating, arguing the frequent whistles favoured the hosts and there was no dialogue with the referees despite his role as captain. He added that heavy pressure can sway officials towards the home side, while stressing Corinthians played well.
Even a one-match ban would rule the midfielder out of the Brasileiro’s 14th-round meeting with Flamengo, scheduled for 16:00 Brasília time.
Before that, Leonardo Jardim's Flamengo side have a Copa Libertadores assignment away to Estudiantes on Wednesday the 29th at 21:30 Brasília time, in the competition's third round.
