Juventus coach Thiago Motta insists Dusan Vlahovic must ‘accept criticism’ but insists that a 0-0 draw against Empoli is a ‘closed chapter’ as the Bianconeri want to ‘improve’ against PSV in the Champions League.

Juventus are preparing for the opening 2024-25 Champions League match against PSV at the Allianz Stadium in Turin.

The Bianconeri trained at Continassa this morning before Motta’s pre-match press conference.

“I can’t wait to play this game and experience these emotions,” said the Old Lady’s boss as quoted by Ilbianconero.com.

“It will be a nice match between two teams who want to play football. We’ll try to bring the result on our side, for us and the crowd.”

The Bianconeri were held to a 0-0 draw by Empoli on Saturday seeing Vlahovic miss a couple of good chances in the second half.

“Everything matters in football. We played a good game in Empoli, but we didn’t get the result we wanted. It’s a closed chapter, so we will focus on tomorrow’s match,” said Motta.

“We feel well. We’ve been working to experience these emotions for a while, and we are proud to be at this stage against a top team. I want to see a great game and bring it where we want, not where PSV want.

“Vlahovic is doing well, it’s important to accept criticism,” continued Motta.

“He has already scored this season and he will try to score more goals. The important thing is that he continues with this spirit, trying to help the team. If we haven’t conceded yet, it’s also his merit. A clean ball puts him in the best condition to score. Football is a responsibility for everyone, so he must accept criticism and continue what he’s doing.”

Vlahovic has two goals in four Serie A appearances so far.

This season’s Champions League has a new format with a league phase where each club will play against eight opponents.

“I liked the previous format, and I like this one as well,” said Motta.

“We’ll face different teams, which is even more motivating because we can experience different emotions from those we’ve had until now. I don’t think it will impact the league because we focus game by game. We think about tomorrow’s game against a good team.

“We will respect our opponent, as we’ve done until now, but we must think about ourselves and what we’ll do,” he continued.

“They feel at ease with the ball and are accustomed to playing between the lines, so we must recover the ball and use it wisely. When we attack, we must force them to play differently from what they are accustomed to.

“We want to give consistency to what we’ve done until now and improve.

“A study said we need 23 points to qualify and I am not bothered. I am only thinking about tomorrow’s match; we must be focused and have positive energy. We’ll have time to think about the rest.”

Brazilian defender Danilo started three games on the bench, and it’s unclear whether he will start against PSV tomorrow.

“Danilo is fit. The important thing is to continue with this determination and training well. The same goes for the other players,” said Motta.

Where do Juventus want to finish in the Champions League this season?

“As high as possible, but we must be competitive on every ball and share the same ideas,” Motta replied.

“It will be important to be in control of the game.

“Football is simple, in the end. 11 players attack and defend. That’s what I want to see tomorrow. Press, help each other, and track back when needed. We must be solid to protect our goal as we’ve done until now.”

How important will it be to play in front of the Allianz Stadium crowd?

“It always helps. The lads want to go the extra mile for the fans. They know it’s a responsibility and it’s very nice. Many fans bring great enthusiasm and energy to our job in the best way.”

Lastly, Motta was asked about his favourites for the Champions League victory.

“I have no idea,” he replied.

“I haven’t thought about the favourites, but eight or nine teams can win the Champions League.”
