Thibaut Courtois offered firm backing to Xabi Alonso after Real Madrid lost 2-1 at home to Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday.

According to L'Équipe, speculation over the coach’s future has intensified, and Spanish outlets have said Sunday’s league trip to Alavés will be his last chance to save his job.

Courtois said the squad had shown unity, that they support the coach, and that everyone is fighting to change the current dynamic.

He said he understood the anger around the recent run, felt the team reacted on the pitch and did all they could, but were beaten by a very strong opponent. He added that winning on Sunday at Alavés is how they change course.

In his press conference, Alonso said he had nothing to reproach his players, praising their late efforts to get back into the game. The defeat was a second in three days at the Bernabéu and a second in a row against City. Real are second in La Liga, 4 points behind Barcelona.
