Sunderland believe they are close to a first summer signing, with Thomas Meunier in the north east and, if all goes well, a two-year deal.

Sunderland Echo understands the 34-year-old, a free agent after leaving Lille, is expected to have a medical today amid interest from Hull City and Valencia.

Despite signing Granit Xhaka, Sunderland have a young squad, and Meunier’s leadership and European knowhow appeal.

He played 35 times for Lille last season and featured for Belgium, and with Nordi Mukiele and Trai Hume would not start every game.

This approach also appears to end hopes of a permanent deal for Lutsharel Geertruida, though his future is unresolved and a Sunderland return is thought highly unlikely.

Matias Soulé is back training with AS Roma, yet there is still expectation he will leave as Gian Piero Gasperini revamps for the Champions League, with interest in Chelsea’s Alejandro Garnacho and Strasbourg’s Diego Moreira. Whether Sunderland meet Roma’s valuation and whether he wants the move remain open, though pre-season should quicken talks.

Sunderland also want a centre back, with Sassuolo’s Tarik Muharemović on the list, though Leeds lead the race and a 50% Juventus sell-on is inflating the fee. A left back is needed after Dennis Cirkin’s exit and a right winger is a clear priority, with the focus on stability and quality.

Work continues on Simon Adingra’s future amid strong interest, with Nilson Angulo essentially in place, and the stance on key players is firm unless a huge bid arrives.
