Thomas Meunier has arrived in the North East for a medical and is set to become Sunderland's first summer signing. The Black Cats have yet to add to the squad that will play in the Europa League.
According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, the former PSG and Borussia Dortmund wing-back is set to sign a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light, with completion expected within 48 hours.
After emerging at Standard Liège, Meunier spent two years with Royal Excelsior Virton. He then joined Club Brugge, made almost 200 appearances and won the Belgian league and cup.
He joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2016 and was a regular over four seasons. He lifted three Ligue 1 titles, two Coupe de France titles, three Coupe de la Ligue titles and three Trophées des Champions, before spells with Borussia Dortmund, Trabzonspor in Türkiye and Lille.
Meunier debuted for Belgium in a 3-1 friendly win over Colombia in November 2013 and missed the 2014 World Cup. He played at the 2018, 2022 and 2026 editions, making three appearances before a 2-1 quarter-final defeat by Spain.
He has 83 caps and 10 goals, the most recent in a 4-2 World Cup qualifier against Wales in October last year. Belgium finished fourth at the 2018 World Cup and he made Marca's all-star team.
Sunderland interest dates back a decade, when he weighed up moves from Club Brugge and cited several suitors, estimating a 30 per cent chance of PSG while stressing the need for minutes. He later joined PSG, making 128 appearances, 105 of them starts.
