Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence played a crucial role in helping England advance to the semi-final of the 2026 World Cup.
The Spurs full-back came off the bench to deliver a solid performance as the Three Lions sealed a date with destiny.
Manager Thomas Tuchel’s decision to call-up the 25-year-old paid dividends in the latter stages of the quarter-final.
Spence came on to add defensive solidity and made several key contributions to keep out the Scandinavians in North America.
The Spurs man made seven defensive contributions, won three out of four ground duels and an aerial duel.
He also completed 12 out of 14 passes and carried the ball with energy. He appeared to have won a penalty off Oscar Bobb, but VAR overturned the decision.
His 34-minute cameo was described as ‘absolutely outstanding‘ a ‘terrific display’. He was excellent in both halves of the pitch.
Spence’s display should serve as a timely reminder to Tottenham ahead of the new season.
Everton and Juventus have been linked the versatile defender, but this is not the time to cash in.
Spence is entering his prime and has finally shown the consistency many believed he was capable of.
His ability to play on either flank, defend aggressively in one-on-one situations and drive forward in transition makes him a valuable asset for Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi.
Tottenham need squad depth if they are to compete on multiple fronts, and selling a homegrown England international would be a backwards step.
Unless an extraordinary offer arrives, Spurs should resist all interest and make Spence a key part of their plans.
