Tottenham Hotspur star Andy Robertson started for Scotland as Brazil beat them 3-0 to top Group C at the 2026 World Cup.
Spurs signed the Scotland captain on the cheap, hoping he would bring some winning experience to the roster.
However, Tottenham must have been seriously unimpressed with what they saw from Robertson as the Tartan Army succumbed to a defeat.
The 32-year-old was dribbled past once and did not do anything of note, notably failing to provide any attacking thrust from the left.
Steve Clarke brought the Tottenham star off at half-time for Kieran Tierney, who made more impact, showing more attacking impetus than Robertson.
Clarke will be wishing he had started the game with Tierney. He provided exactly the kind of spark the team desperately needed.
‘His half-time substitution was almost a blessing in disguise,’ one publication wrote about Robertson’s performance.
Scotland face a nervy wait to see whether they will go through as one of the eight-best third-ranked teams, a quirk of the new, controversial 48-team format.
Robertson’s World Cup has not been the best audition for the North London outfit. He has been noticeably poor versus Morocco and Brazil.
The decision to sign him was always a ponderous one despite the experience, pedigree, and winning mentality.
He was already clearly on the decline at Liverpool, and it seems that decline is poised to continue at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs needed someone to provide competition for the oft-injured Destiny Udogie, but that is precisely why the club signed a versatile player like Djed Spence.
Even though the left flank is a bit awkward for Spence, he still looks much better there than the current Robertson.
The wiser move would have been to give youngster Souza the back-up role alongside Spence. He can get valuable minutes to develop.
But now, he has to head out on loan in search of playing time while the club is stuck with a noticeably poor alternative entering the twilight of his career.
