An injury to Andrey Santos, as first mentioned by Enzo Maresca in the press conference on Thursday preceding the game against Benfica, and then confirmed by him in the presser afterwards, is so frustrating for the midfielder and Chelsea.
He has had a few games on the bench but got into the lineup to face Brighton last weekend from the start. He made a mistake which contributed to the red card his team got. It was a shame as he had impressed in other cameos so far this season and earlier that game.

It was a classic example of his play so far for us – some good stuff and some untidy stuff. Santos has so much talent but needs games. This is the time of season where we need him to be fit – Moises Caicedo shouldn’t be starting 3 games in 7 days but will have to because Santos can’t.
These are important matches for his development and for the team. We can only imagine how he feels right now. Maresca said he wouldn’t be back until after the international break. Let’s hope that means immediately after. Fatigue levels are only climbing, and getting him into the team soon is essential.
It will be very interesting to see if Romeo Lavia is fit to start against Liverpool at the weekend. He got some minutes as a sub on Saturday, then didn’t feature last night. It’s not clear if he’s ready to start, especially in a hectic game against Liverpool.
The squad is at breaking point in some positions right now, and getting Lavia and Benoit Badiashile back and fit just in time has been a huge boost. It looks like Lavia and Santos will both hopefully be ready for our next game but one, against Nottingham Forest.
