Two teams with perfect records from the first two matchdays lock horns in the return of the Women’s Champions League on Tuesday night. Wolfsburg will hope to recover from their disappointing home defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt, while Lyon have won each of their nine matches in all competitions since the start of the season.
Stephan Lerch’s side is now six points behind Bayern Munich in the Frauen-Bundesliga after squandering their lead in a 3-2 loss on Saturday. Frankfurt played more than 50 minutes with ten, but the hosts only managed to score twice from 31 shots.
Janina Minge, who scored injury-time penalty-kicks in both Champions League wins, couldn’t convert a similar chance in an all-action first-half against Europa Cup participants Frankfurt.
Minge’s goal against Vålerenga was a 98th-minute winner for Wolfsburg on matchday two. They started the campaign with an emphatic 4-0 over PSG. The second game against a Première Ligue side will pose a bigger challenge for the two-time Women’s Champions League winners, however.
Including the mighty Bayern Munich, OL Lyonnes beat three Frauen-Bundesliga teams in pre-season friendlies. They also thumped PSG 6-1 in the top-of-the-table clash back in September. In the Champions League, their wins came against defending champions Arsenal and Austrian champions St. Pölten.
The two teams met last season in the previous format of the group stage. Lyon won both games to finish the group with a perfect record. They also competed in a record four Champions League finals, with Wolfsburg’s only win coming in the first duel back in 2013 in London.
Team News
Lineth Beerensteyn will most likely return to the lineup after playing only the last half-hour on the weekend. Jule Brand will play against the club she played for three years before her summer move to OL Lyonnes. Legendary center-back Wendie Renard could become the first player to win a century of UEFA women’s club fixtures.
