As reported by as.com, Athletic president Jon Uriarte has called club elections at San Mamés for Friday eight May, the same weekend Valencia visit Bilbao. With candidacies due by 21 April, there is currently no obvious challenger.

The current board will cease its duties on Sunday 29 March, after which a caretaker board will be installed in line with the club’s roadmap.

Under the statutes, any hopeful must present guarantees and collect more than one thousand unique member signatures. With little more than a month to mobilise, the effort requires time, patience and a broad volunteer network.

Uriarte’s management and profile have discouraged, at least for now, a serious rival for the Ibaigane chair. Four years after beating Barkala and Aretxabaleta by a clear margin, the electoral scene in Bizkaia is quiet.

Rumours in Bilbao point to tentative moves by a former board member, another push from Neguri’s industrial circles with a well-known businessman, and a third track around another recent ex-president, which has even floated Andoni Iraola as a potential coach. He does not appear likely to engage in an electoral battle given his current Premier status. For now these stirrings are embryonic, and no ballot would be expected, which would see Uriarte returned without a contest for a further four years.
