Thursday night will see FC Utrecht go up against La Liga side Real Betis in Sevilla. It also gives a chance for former Utrecht midfielder Sofyan Amrabat to play against his old side. Amrabat made his way into senior football while with Utrecht back in the 2014/2015 season. He went on to play another two seasons with the club before earning a move to Feyenoord in 2017.
Speaking to the press ahead of the clash, the Real Betis man said ‘I’m really looking forward to it. I grew up there and learned so much. Utrecht is a club that will always be close to my heart’. The Moroccan midfielder has certainly had an interesting career since he left the Eredivisie in 2018. Firstly he crossed over the border into Belgium, where he spent a season with Club Brugge. After just one year he was loaned to Hellas Verona before moving on to Fiorentina. After 107 games for Fiorentina he was signed by Manchester United on loan for one campaign.
However, he struggled to make a big impact at Old Trafford and returned to Italy, where he was eventually sold again, this time to Turkish giants Fenerbahce. Amrabat played one season with the side, scoring twice in 39 games, before the loan move to Real Betis. He has played 10 games for Real Betis this season, two in the Europa League and eight in La Liga. Of those, he has started seven.
