According to AS, Spain’s World Cup semi-final qualification and Belgium’s exit have cleared the way for Valencia to push through Meunier’s signing this week.
Valencia have an agreement in principle with the 34-year-old Belgian right-back, who became a free agent in June. Progress had been paused while he was at the World Cup, and his medical, which will be exhaustive as he turns 35 in September, could not be completed.
Given he played the tournament without issues, that is not expected to block the move. He would be the club’s fourth addition after Justin de Haas, Aliou Dieng and Ryonosuke Sato, or the fifth if Guido Rodríguez is included.
The plan is for Meunier to undergo tests, sign a one-year deal with an optional extra year, then take a holiday before returning in three weeks, roughly 15 days before the league starts. The paperwork is due to be formalised in the coming days.
Corberán wanted a veteran right-back after the departures of Thierry and Saravia and Foulquier’s injury. If nothing changes, Meunier fits that brief, having featured more early than late at the World Cup.
