Valencia and the Puçol council have launched the Year of Pepe Claramunt at Mestalla on Friday 13 February 2026, marking the 80th anniversary of his birth on 10 July 1946.
According to Superdeporte, a year-long programme will follow the inauguration. Claramunt, named Puçol’s favourite son in 1999, was visibly moved and thanked both institutions for a tribute he said would stay with him forever.
The ceremony brought together club director general Javier Solís, AFVCF president Fernando Giner, and Puçol mayor Paz Carceller alongside members of the municipal corporation.
Attendees also toured the Nou Mestalla Experience Center to view the new stadium project, which is planned to become Valencia’s home from summer 2027.
Solís highlighted Claramunt’s historic stature and the importance of honouring those who have defended the shirt, calling the gesture a mark of the club’s greatness.
Carceller praised an emblematic neighbour who has carried Puçol’s name to the highest levels and described the tribute as an honour for the town.
Claramunt captained Valencia across 12 seasons in midfield, approaching 450 official appearances with 90 goals. He lifted the 1967 Cup and was central to the 1970/71 league triumph.
At international level he debuted for Spain at 22, became the first Valencian to captain the national side, won 23 caps and scored 4 goals. Giner said tributes like this help teach younger fans about homegrown winners.
