Virgil van Dijk has added new layer of uncertainty to Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool admitting he hopes the Egyptian star remains at Anfield but conceding that “no one knows what will happen” in the coming months.

Salah recently etched his name deeper into Premier League history becoming the most prolific goal contributor for single club after providing assist for Hugo Ekitike’s second goal against Brighton.

However the historic milestone came amid turbulent week for Salah who publicly voiced his frustration after being benched for three consecutive league match under new head coach Arne Slot.

A situation that also saw him left out of Liverpool’s Champions League clash against Inter Milan last Tuesday.

Speaking to the media on Sunday, Liverpool captain Van Dijk addressed the growing speculation surrounding Salah’s future offering both support & realism.

“I would love Mohamed to stay with us because he’s one of our leaders,” Van Dijk said. “But he’s heading to the Africa Cup of Nations now. We’ll stay in touch over the coming days and weeks as we always do and we’ll see what happens.”

The Dutch defender acknowledged that the situation remains beyond anyone’s control.

“I hope he comes back to us after the tournament. His presence is extremely important for this team,” Van Dijk added. “But we all know football. nobody can predict the future.”

Salah Heads to AFCON after final Liverpool appearance

The Brighton match marked Salah’s final appearance for Liverpool before travelling to Morocco where he will represent Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations which kicks off at the end of the week.

Despite the recent controversy, Van Dijk insisted the dressing room remains united & unaffected.

“Mohamed handled the situation very well,” the Liverpool skipper concluded. “The atmosphere in the dressing room hasn’t been impacted at all.”
