The Brazilian federation’s refereeing commission published VAR audio on Sunday explaining why São Paulo’s Damián Bobadilla was not sent off in Corinthians’ 3-2 win, after home players alleged an obscene celebration.

Footage shows the Paraguayan moving his hands near his groin without contact, which led referee Anderson Daronco and VAR chief Rodolpho Toski Marques to reject a red card.

The review took about two minutes. In the booth, Toski deemed it interpretative because there was no touch, asked Daronco to recheck, and said the motion could be read as a rallying gesture.

Daronco agreed, cited a cultural element in some celebrations, particularly from foreign players, and chose not to caution Bobadilla, explaining the decision in-stadium.

The call drew criticism from Corinthians. Football executive Marcelo Paz questioned consistency, noting Allan and André Luiz were sent off for obscene gestures earlier in the Brasileirão.

Against Fluminense in round nine, Allan was sent off for placing a hand on his genitals while looking towards opponents, then received the minimum STJD suspension and a club fine. Two rounds later, André Luiz was dismissed after referee Flávio Rodrigues de Souza said he directed the gesture at Andreas Pereira, and he also got the minimum ban and a fine.

Corinthians sit 16th on 18 points after 15 rounds. They host Barra on Thursday at 19:30 in Itaquera in the Copa do Brasil fifth-phase second leg, having won the first leg 1-0.
