Colombia and Portugal played out a goalless draw at Hard Rock Stadium, with the South Americans dominating throughout but unable to find a breakthrough. Colombia created the better chances across both halves, forcing Diogo Costa into action repeatedly, while Portugal managed only two shots on target despite sustained possession.

The result secured first place in World Cup Group C for Colombia, who will face Ghana in the round of sixteen, while Portugal finished second and were drawn against Croatia. Davinson Sánchez thought he had snatched a winner in stoppage time, but VAR ruled his headed goal offside in the final dramatic twist. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Colombia v Portugal.

Winners

Camilo Vargas (Colombia)

Camilo Vargas produced the defining moment of this World Cup Group C encounter, making an outstanding save to deny Bruno Fernandes from close range in the 39th minute. The Colombian goalkeeper dived to his right to push away the Manchester United midfielder's powerful strike when Portugal had their clearest sight of goal.

Vargas comfortably dealt with Cristiano Ronaldo's direct free kick, catching a central effort at a comfortable height. Throughout the match he showed assured handling and calm distribution from the back, never appearing troubled by Portugal's occasional spells of pressure despite their possession.

His shot-stopping proved the difference between a draw and potential defeat for Colombia. By preserving the clean sheet when it mattered most, Vargas anchored the defensive performance that secured group leadership and a favorable last-16 draw against Ghana.

Diogo Costa (Portugal)

Diogo Costa kept Portugal in the match against relentless Colombian pressure, producing an excellent diving save to deny Jhon Córdoba's powerful 17th-minute strike. The Portuguese goalkeeper stretched to his right to push away what appeared a certain goal when the striker fired toward the bottom corner.

Costa was busy throughout, making comfortable saves from James Rodríguez and Jefferson Lerma's efforts while dealing with multiple attempts from Jhon Arias with assured handling. He faced six shots on target compared to just two at the other end, highlighting Colombia's attacking dominance.

Without Costa's interventions, Portugal could have trailed early and suffered defeat. His performance ensured his team remained in the match despite creating little going forward, preserving second place in Group C and a last-16 tie against Croatia.

Loser

João Cancelo (Portugal)

João Cancelo endured a difficult 45 minutes before being substituted at half-time, struggling to make any meaningful attacking contribution against Colombia's organized defensive structure. His early withdrawal signaled Roberto Martínez's dissatisfaction with his performance on the right flank.

The right-back found it challenging to provide width on his side, with his crossing lacking accuracy throughout the opening period. He contributed little to Portugal's build-up play and was exposed on occasions when Colombia countered through his flank.

Martínez replaced him with Diogo Dalot at the interval, who immediately provided greater attacking thrust and later struck the post with a curling effort. Cancelo's underwhelming display meant Portugal lacked balance during a first half where they struggled to create clear chances.
