Chelsea face Barcelona tonight at Stamford Bridge, and the big question marks are over Cole Palmer. Enzo Maresca has said his star player won’t play, but he did feature in training yesterday which has raised hopes.

“What a sight this is for Chelsea fans – Cole Palmer, who injured his toe after two months out with his groin injury. We were wondering whether he would be out training with the rest of the team – well there he is. He’s got that special boot on over his left foot where he banged his left toe, an injury which Enzo Maresca said would rule him out of both games,” Sky Sports’ Gary Cotterill said in his report from Cobham yesterday.
“Well, he is out there for these early stages, these warmup stages we’re allowed to watch on Champions League nights, whether he’s still out there later, we will find out…”
We are certain he won’t start tonight, and 80% sure he won’t start on Sunday against Arsenal either. But we’ve certainly been wrong before. It’s not impossible that the whole things is a ruse cooked up by the manager. Either way, it feels like we’re at most two games away from having him back.
You can see the midfielder speaking in the clip embedded here, if you can tolerate almost 90 seconds of Cotterill:
Lamine Yamal was compared to Estevao Willian in the press conference, and you can imagine just how Enzo Maresca dealt with that comparison.
In other Yamal news, Maresca was asked whether he planned to use former Barcelona man Marc Cucurella to stop him, and while he played down the threat, we all know it’s going to be a key duel.
