Real Madrid’s defeat to Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League last night saw the team dish out one of their most unconvincing displays under Xabi Alonso as they looked second best to the Merseyside club for the better part of the game.
While it was not completely unexpected, Los Blancos were indeed the relative favourites in terms of the momentum and the defeat highlights that there are still areas where they must improve.
After all, their performances in big games so far this season have not been particularly memorable and their wins over Juventus and Barcelona remain their only memorable big game wins.
As captured by El Chiringuito, Barcelona president Joan Laporta took a dig at Real Madrid’s defeat in a public appearance.
While he was addressing the media in Belgium ahead of Barcelona’s game against Club Brugge, someone from the crowd screamed Hala Madrid to take a jibe at him.
The Barcelona president instantly said, “Yesterday was rough for you.”
He was then asked if he had a good night yesterday, referring to Real Madrid’s defeat, to which he responded in the positive saying, “Yes, very good.”
Needless to say, the Catalan club president’s comments can only be seen to be ironic given how his side lost to Real Madrid in their meeting in La Liga just weeks ago.
Further, Los Blancos are still ahead of Barcelona in La Liga and his comments, thus, do not sit well.
The recent Clasico went on to prove how dominant Real Madrid are over Barcelona at this point in time and the 2-1 scoreline in their favour was kind on the Catalans who could well have lost by a heavier margin.
