The Toffees go into the game in 10th place in the Barclays Women’s Super League table after a tough start to the season. Opponents Chelsea are in the somewhat unfamiliar position of second.
When speaking to the media in the pre-match press conference, Everton boss Sørensen said that Chelsea are still as strong as they’ve ever been but that doesn’t mean that his own side can’t take points from South West London.
“They’re still a very good team, they have a very good squad available and they’re still unbeaten,” Sørensen said. “Are there weaknesses in the team? Yeah. Can we exploit it? Yeah, if we are very good on the day and get everything right, we have a chance. We showed that last year in the tight game against them.
“I’m also very respectful of the international players that they have. I think they had 20 on international duty, so they have a very good squad available.
“We have nothing to lose. We will go out, play the best way we can, make sure we enjoy it and learn from it.”
Everton have scored in all of their last seven matches in all competitions. Keeping teams out at the other end has been a problem and Sørensen says that the focus is on putting that right.
He said “We are focusing on tightening up on the defence. That was always our bread and butter that we had a good defence.
“We recruited to score more goals and that’s what we are doing, so that’s good but if our foundation is not there defensively, which it hasn’t been for various reasons, then we’re maybe not as tight as we’ve been before. That’s been the main focus; to ensure that we are extremely well-organised and that we work well as a unit.
“Hopefully, we can display that against Chelsea because it’ll help us to do something. I have no doubt that we will create chances.”
Injuries have played their part in disrupting Everton’s progress but Sørensen says that things look to be getting better in that space.
He said “The number of players that we had out was challenging in the run of fixtures that we faced [in the last block]. They’re looking to be back now, so it’s just about building up minutes.
“The majority of them went away with their national teams, so we have had a small group which we have worked really well with.
“We finally have almost a full squad available which hasn’t been the case at all this season.”
Everton’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Chelsea kicks-off at 2.30pm on Sunday afternoon.
