Former Blue Michael Essien has labelled Chelsea’s season “very disappointing” considering the players they have in the squad.

Chelsea endured a disastrous campaign in which they finished tenth following a 2-1 defeat against Sunderland on the final day of the season.

The Blues missed out on European football completely, with serious questions facing everyone involved at the club.

Michael Essien shares thoughts on Chelsea

Chelsea have now finished 12th, 6th, 4th and 10th under BlueCo despite spending almost £2bn on players over the last four years.

It’s been reported the club’s hierarchy have acknowledged mistakes have been made, but fans want to see action taken.

The appointment of Xabi Alonso is certainly a small step in the right direction, but there’s so much work to do, especially in the summer.

No European football will make it difficult for Chelsea to attract the calibre of player they need to improve the squad.

Playing once a week should help to a certain extent, and Essien is sure the Blue will do better under Alonso next season.

“It’s been a very disappointing season, considering the players they have,” he told journalist Lloyd Canfield.

“I’m sure they will come back next season and do better.

“We have to give them support and see what they can do.”
