A significant late blow for Carlo Ancelotti, as Brazil have been hit with an injury setback to Wesley.

The right-back, who limped off during the friendly against Egypt after suffering sharp thigh pain, has now been diagnosed with an adductor injury following scans. As a result, he will miss the Brazil squad at the World Cup.

The Brazilian FA confirmed the news on Sunday afternoon, alongside the announcement of his replacement: midfielder Éderson, formerly of Atalanta, who is already with the squad in the United States.

Wesley’s injury occurred just 16 minutes into the match when he pulled up during a sprint in attack. He was forced off and replaced by Danilo, with the Roma defender visibly emotional on the bench as concerns quickly grew over the severity of the issue.

Éderson called up

Born in Campo Grande, the holding midfielder came through Desportivo Brasil and spent time in Cruzeiro’s youth setup before making his name at Corinthians and Fortaleza. He then earned his move to Europe with Salernitana in Italy, before stepping up again with Atalanta, where he became a key figure.

Éderson is now heavily linked with a high-profile move to Manchester United, with talks understood to be at an advanced stage.

His inclusion has raised a few eyebrows, given expectations that Ancelotti would opt for a like-for-like full-back replacement. Names such as Paulo Henrique and Vitinho were considered, but the coach has instead turned to Éderson, who is expected to join up with the Brazil camp in the coming hours.
