Liverpool head coach Gareth Taylor expressed his disappointment at his team’s 3-1 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.
A brace from Lisa Naalsund and one from Fridolina Rolfo secured the win, with Alice Bergstrom scoring the goal for the visitors.
It means the Reds will stay at the bottom of the Women’s Super League table.
Asked what he intended to tell his players as they reviewed the performance, he told broadcasters Sky Sports: “We’ve come up short today and that’s fine, but we really have to do the basics of the game really well but also play our way.
“Failing our way is absolutely fine, when you try and play the same as United play, they’re going to do it better than you nine times out of ten.”
He had already said: “We weren’t at our best. At times we tried to play United at their game which they’ve been doing for a long time and they’re a long way ahead of where we are.”
Liverpool had logged a goalless draw against London City Lionesses and their first victory of the season, a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur, in January, as well as progressing to the fifth round of the Women’s FA Cup with a win over London Bees.
And Taylor reflected on the defeat to old rivals United: “I think if we look at the game again, we had our moments, we had our final third actions, we had a fair chunk of corners.
“I just felt we gave away too much for them: too many attempts on our goal, due to some of our own mistakes. We allowed United into that a little bit just from our play. There were some significant upturn in the last two games on final third action.
“[I have a] sense of disappointment really, but really aware of where we are and the steps we have to make.”
