Ferhat Cogalan once lit up LaLiga Promises for Valencia, yet a decade on he is still searching for a stable foothold in senior football. His journey from hailed academy star to a career on the margins underlines how uncertain the step to professionalism can be.
Born in France in 2002 and of Turkish heritage, the playmaker joined Valencia’s academy in 2013 after time at Barcelona’s youth set-up under the stewardship of Rufete. He exploded in 2015 at Arona, scoring two superb goals in the final as Valencia won the tournament. EsportBase reports that, on turning 16, he was told to wait on a new deal.
Amid changes in the academy hierarchy, with Rufete departing and Pablo Longoria and Mateu Alemany arriving, Valencia did not accelerate his renewal. LOSC Lille stepped in, paying around 120,000 euros in training compensation to sign one of Paterna’s brightest prospects.
Lille seemed a logical platform, but Cogalan’s progress slowed. He featured for the club’s youth sides and reserves, without breaking into the first-team picture or making a Ligue 1 debut. After his contract ended, he joined Pau FC in Ligue 2, though he mainly played for Pau B in National 3.
His next move took him to Türkiye with Yeni Mersin IY in 2024, before a loan to US Boulogne B in 2026. The boy who dazzled in Arona remains in search of his place in the professional game.
