The league phase of the Champions League ended last night with three Bundesliga sides progressing to the next round.
Bayern Munich were the only side to finish in the top eight and get a bye to the round of 16, while following Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 loss to Inter and Bayer Leverkusen’s 3-0 win against Villarreal, they will be in the playoff round.
The other Bundesliga side, Eintracht Frankfurt, crashed out of the tournament.
The draw of potential opponents will take place on Friday.
Each Bundesliga side already knows who they may face, and similar to last year, there is a possibility that they will face one another.
Leverkusen and Dortmund could be drawn against one another in the playoff round. If not, die Schwarzgelben will play Atalanta while Kasper Hjulmand’s side will face Olympiakos.
If both teams progress, then one of them will face Bayern Munich in the round of 16. The other will face top-seeded Arsenal.
This is a similar scenario to last season when Leverkusen and Bayern played each other in the round of 16, with Vincent Kompany’s side triumphing.
In terms of coefficient ranking, this scenario is not ideal, as it means that there could be only a minimum of two Bundesliga sides in the quarter-finals. In the current table, Germany currenlty hold a slender lead over Spain for the second fifth spot (behind England), both have six teams remaining in the three European competitions.
Following Frankfurt’s elimination, the Bundesliga sides in the Europa League (Stuttgart and Freiburg) and Conference League (Mainz) will need to continue to progress.
