Sunderland will wear their blue kit in today's Tyne-Wear derby against Newcastle United because the clubs' traditional stripes are deemed too similar under current regulations.

According to Sunderland Echo, the Premier League handbook's Rule M.22 requires both teams to wear strips that are clearly different and contrasting to prevent confusion for players, officials, supporters and broadcasters, including those with colour vision deficiency.

With Newcastle in black and white, Sunderland will wear blue to ensure a clear visual distinction. Newcastle have occasionally used their home colours in this derby, most recently in last season's FA Cup tie at the Stadium of Light.
